The BBC answered over 9,000 complaints from the audience during January 2008.
These ranged from a small number of complaints about potentially serious breaches of editorial guidelines through to a much larger collection of views about programme content and scheduling. The key themes which emerged are as follows:
Violence:
Some viewers were unhappy with the violence shown in the EastEnders storyline involving Jay and a gang of youths.
Bias:
Match Of The Day Live: Mansfield v Middlesbrough attracted complaints from viewers who felt that studio analyst Carlton Palmer made allegedly biased comments in favour of the owner of Mansfield Town F.C.
Bad Language:
Complaints were received from viewers who were upset with the strong language used by certain characters during the Catherine Tate Christmas Show.
Complaints were also received from viewers unhappy with the use of the term ‘shag’ during The Weakest Link.
Offence:
Complaints were answered from viewers who felt that the scenes of animal slaughter in Kill It, Cook It, Eat It were too graphic.
Some viewers took offence to the homosexual content and storyline in Torchwood.
Poor Quality:
Complaints were received from a number of viewers who felt that One And Only… is of a poor standard.
