COMPLAINTS TO THE BBC: AUGUST 2008

The BBC answered almost 10,000 complaints from the audience during August 2008.

These ranged from a small number of complaints about potentially serious breaches of editorial guidelines
through to a much larger collection of views about programme content and scheduling. The key themes which emerged are as follows:

SATURATION/INSUFFICIENT COVERAGE
The Olympics 2008 prompted complaints in this category, where some people felt that there had
been insufficient coverage of the Opening Ceremony in the early evening television schedule.

STANDARDS OF INTERVIEWING/PRESENTATION
The Olympics 2008 was the dominant theme here too, where some people complained of too much
commentary and inappropriate discussion of politics during the Opening Ceremony.

OFFENCE - GENERAL
A number of complaints were received about comments on Mock the Week, where a comedian
made highly personal remarks about an Olympic gold medallist.

SCHEDULING
Complaints were received in response to Olympic Breakfast replacing the usual Breakfast
programme. Many of these complainants were unhappy that Breakfast was only shown on digital
television during the Olympics 2008.

VIOLENCE
EastEnders received complaints claiming excessive violence, where one of the characters was
stabbed and killed.
